As much as black is the opposite to white, Delhi is opposite to Singapore. The place is immaculate. Even my mother, who prides herself on having a house cleaner that a surgical theatre, could learn a few things from the people of Singapore. They have an underground that you could eat your dinner off, but its not advisable as it would incur a £500 fine for littering. Every building looks practically brand new, the parks and public conveniences are wonderfully maintained and you can taste the freshness of the air. The people are even ridiculously friendly. In the airport while queuing at a bureau de change, a local man walked out of his way, laden with heavy bags, just to inform us there was no queue at the equivalent branch upstairs. Coming from Delhi, we were so used to giving anybody who approached us the cold shoulder, we must have seemed two of the rudest people he had ever encountered.
Singapore is a fantastic place. However, this all comes at a price, a price a long way from our rapidly diminishing budgets. Chocolate bars cost about £1.50, a new book would set you back £20 and for a pint of beer you wouldn't get much change from a tenner. So rather begrudgingly we have moved on and are currently staying in a small town in Malaysia called Malaka where the beer is only £1. So on that note, until next time.....
